The Goldscheider firm produced this porcelain figurine, nicknamed "Bat Girl" or "Butterfly Girl," in Vienna, Austria, in 1912. The company was founded by Friedrich Goldscheider (1845-1897) in 1885 and became a leading firm specializing in ceramics and bronzes until its closure in 1953. Vienna was one of the centres of the Art Nouveau movement and this "Bat Girl" epitomizes the asymmetric style that was so popular at the time.
