The artist William F. Wilson executed this large oil painting of Quebec City seen from Lévis in 1851. Wilson studied in Belgium under a Flemish master. He was active from 1842 to 1873, but spent only a ten-year period in Canada. The sleigh in the foreground shows a young military officer in the back seat. As the painting was repatriated from a large country estate in England, it is thought that the soldier may well be the painting's original owner, who took this work back to England at the end of his tour of duty. The work also depicts the ice road spanning the river that was used in winter to bring hay and other provisions into the city.
