Originating in France, clocks of this style were frequently found in rooms considered the domain of men - the library and study. The pyramidal case and Egyptian-style ornamentation are associated with a resurgence of interest in Egypt after Napoleon's Egyptian campaign of 1798. The style remained popular for decorative objects associated with academicism, classicism and the advancement of knowledge.
