This felt hat dating from 1965 was made by Hortense Modes in Montreal. The hat, inspired by the works of Henri Matisse exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1961, was designed by Ms Baillie. She used the same technique as Matisse had used, that is, she made paper cutouts of the patterns, which Hortense Modes then reproduced as appliqués for the hat.
