This silver medal was awarded to the Notman & Sandham photography studio at the World's Fair held in Paris in 1878. The medal is signed "J. C. Chaplain."

At the fair, the Notman & Sandham studio of Montreal and the Notman & Fraser studio of Toronto displayed photographs illustrating typical Canadian scenes, such as caribou and moose hunting, snowshoeing, curling, skating, the Victoria Bridge, the Windsor Hotel, and a variety of portraits.
