This bronze medal was awarded to the Notman photography studio in 1876 at the International Exhibition in Philadelphia. The inscription "H. Mitchell. Sc" is engraved on the medal, which in Latin means that it was made by H. Mitchell.

According to an official document confirming the award, the United States Centennial Commission presented the medal to the Notman studio for the artistic excellence of its photographs of groups of hunters.

The Philadelphia exhibition, known officially as the International Exhibition of Arts, Manufactures and Products of the Soil and Mine, was the first major international exhibition held in the United States. It proved to be a great popular success, attracting close to 9 million visitors and including exhibitors from 37 different countries.
