This portrait was executed in about 1810 by William Berczy, then Canada's leading artist. The sitter is Marie-Anne Hervieux (d. 1819), the daughter of a Montreal merchant, Jean-Baptiste Hervieux. In 1784 she married Jean-Baptiste Melchior Hertel de Rouville (1748-1817), the fourth seigneur de Rouville who also owned part of the seigneury of Chambly. The McCord Museum contains over 1,000 portraits of people connected with Canadian history, most of which date to before 1850. The collection includes several hundred 18th-century mezzotints of prominent government and military figures from both the French and British regimes.
