James Duncan (1806-1881) was a painter, lithographer and drawing teacher. In 1847, this well-respected artist and others, including Cornelius Kreighoff, founded the Montreal Society of Artists. Duncan painted numerous watercolours of scenes in the city of Montreal. He was highly regarded by the McCord family, who engaged him to paint this portrait of Jane Davidson Ross (1785-1866), wife of David Ross (1770-1837).
