Painter, architect, author and colonizer, William Berczy (1744-1813) was one of the greatest painters in Canada; his works rank among the best of early Canadian painting. Born in Germany, he came to Canada in 1792 as a colonist. Berczy painted religious and secular works of various styles, although he was best known for his paintings in the neo-classical style that was so popular at the time.
