Keys to History

From the Île Sainte-Hélène around 1850,one could make out the dome of the Bonsecours Market, the towers of Notre Dame Cathedral, Mount Royal and the port of Montreal. The river carried sailing ships and steamboats like the Montréal. After 1809, when the first steamboat made its appearance on the Saint Lawrence River, ships of this type continued to multiply.
