Keys to History

The Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain during the second half of the 18th century. Workers came together in huge numbers in enormous manufacturing plants. Their work was made easier by the introduction of machine tools.

In the province of Canada, however, the first phase of industrialization occurred in the mid-19th century. It was during this period that large factories outfitted with machine tools made their appearance in cities, beginning in Montreal.
