Thomas George Marlay served Quebec, starting in 1830, under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel James Patisson Cockburn. Marlay and Cockburn formed an artistic alliance that resulted in numerous illustrations such as this one. In this winter scene, Marlay depicts the market in Upper Town, Quebec City. This etching is one of six depicting the city and the surrounding area published in a brochure and based on watercolours by James Patisson Cockburn.
