Keys to History
This illustration is taken from an album entitled The Britannia and Conway Tubular Bridges, which is devoted to the first tubular bridges built in Wales.
The Britannia, with masonry columns soaring to a height of 61 meters and tubes spanning a total of 560 meters, was hailed as an engineering marvel. It was, however, not without detractors: some engineers who advocated trellis and triangle girder systems, then in their early experimental stage, criticized the tube for being uneconomical in its use of material.
