Keys to History

This scene depicting the construction of the tubes on the Britannia Bridge in Wales was executed by the artist George Hawkins in September 1848, a time when engineers were experimenting with new bridge-building theories.

Completed in 1850, the Britannia Bridge was one of the first tubular railway bridges to be built by the British engineer Robert Stephenson. It was made up of two tubes measuring a total of 140 metres in length.
