This portrait, the only authenticated image of Colonel By, may have been done by his own hand. By was originally from London; he immigrated to Canada in the early 19th century and made his reputation as a military officer and engineer. By is credited not only with the construction of the Rideau Canal, but also with the founding of Bytown, which was renamed Ottawa in 1855.
