This gold pendant belonged to Major John André (1750-?). Encrusted with painted ivory and pearls, it bears the inscription "Decus Est Pro Patria Mori." As a lieutenant in the British Army who was stationed in Canada, André was involved in the defence of Johns Street, which was taken by American forces in November 1775 after a two-month siege.
