Born in 1748 in Gibraltar, Sir James Henry Craig was an officer, administrator and, from 1807 to 1811, governor general of Canada. A small man with an abundance of charisma, he was well liked by many, and seen as controversial by others. Two pastel drawings of Craig are still in existence, this one, by Gerritt Schipper, and another by William von Moll Bercy, which is in the collection of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec.
