This figurine is a fine example of the neo-classical porcelain sculpture produced in the mid-19th century. It is, in fact, a miniature of the marble sculpture by Johann Heinrich Dannecker (1758-1841). Many Victorian families purchased such reproductions to demonstrate their appreciation of classical art. The original sculpture is considered one of the finest pieces of the 19th century, but it became well known largely as a result of such miniatures.
