Description

Henri Julien, who worked in the second half of the 19th century, was an illustrator with a keen eye for observing daily events and commonplace activities. His drawings of rural and domestic life supply us with a wealth of visual information on Canada and particularly Quebec. He apprenticed under William Augustus Leggo in 1869, and from 1888 onwards headed the art department of the Montreal Star, where he produced many caricatures of political figures. The McCord Museum has a wealth of drawings from the 19th century that illustrate everything from country dances to formal receptions, political rallies to rural interiors.
