The Holland collection of gowns and accessories, dating from the early 1870s to 1900, illustrates the fashionable elegance of two sisters, one of whom, Miss Estelle Louise Allien, married Philip Henry Holland of Montreal and came to live in this city in 1873. This intricately cut evening dress is made of pale pink silk faille embellished with a silk embroidered border of multicoloured running floral motifs. The impressive dress was used in a television broadcast featuring the McCord Costume collection in 1967, four years before the Museum's official opening at its present Sherbrooke Street address. It gave the fledgling Costume collection much-needed exposure.
