This fashion plate presents two types of dresses for the 1813 summer season: a morning promenade dress and an evening dress. The first, on the left, may be said to resemble one of the McCord Museum's summer dresses (M15300) by virtue of its high-waisted bodice, its square neckline and its classic cut, the vertical lines of which are reminiscent of columns. However, unlike the dress in the McCord collection, the one shown in this print is short-sleeved.
In the early part of the 19th century, English fashion magazines such as the Lady's Magazine, in which this print appeared, were sold in Montreal.
