Fashion plates from 1830-1835 reveal various, though often similar, methods of flattening the upper part of the sleeve. One such way is illustrated in this print from an 1834 issue of Ladies' Cabinet of Fashion, Music and Romance.

The flattened area of a sleeve is curiously referred to as a "cleft mancheron" in a text accompanying a Montreal fashion plate captioned "Fashions for October 1832," which appeared in the December 1832 issue of Montreal Museum or Journal of Literature and Arts.
