Keys to History

This print shows one stage in the erection of the Victoria Bridge's central tube, which took place in the winter of 1858 to 1859. The artist has drawn upon a photograph by the professional photographer William Notman. The print, unlike the photograph, shows several labourers at work.

The construction of the central tube was one of the most arduous phases of the bridge's construction. Braving ice and cold, the engineer James Hodges had the work carried out during the winter of 1858 to 1859. His goal was to stay on schedule and finish construction as planned, in 1860.
