The location from wich this watercolour was executed, looking north-east across to the city, is identified in the inscription as " a point on the river beyond St. Gabriel farm". St. Gabriel's Farm was situated near the Lachine Canal in Griffintown, close to the Montreal Common. The farm belonged to the Congregation of Notre-Dame, the oldest teaching order in the city, founded by Marguerite Bourgeoys (1620-1700). (Excerpt from: GRAHAM, Conrad.
