This silver medal was struck to commemorate the visit of H.R.H. Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (1841-1910) to Canada in August, 1860. This was the heir to the throne's first visit to any overseas realm, and it was a source of great anticipation and much planning of festivities in the various Canadian cities on his itinerary. The main reason for the visit was the official inauguration of Montreal's Victoria Bridge, considered at the time the greatest achievement of modern engineering.
