Keys to History
The Bank of Montreal in 1890. This first Canadian bank, founded in 1817, opened this building in 1847. The institution had a period of great prosperity thanks to the recovery of local industry following the depression of 1873-1879, but mostly thanks to the development of the Canadian West, from which it profited extensively through the Canadian Pacific. As the business relations of its shareholders and directors expanded, it became the head of a powerful network. That of the Royal Bank would become its rival at the beginning of the 20th century.
