The Notman collection is a unique historical resource, not least because of the detailed records kept by the photographers. For every negative produced, an extra print was pasted in a picture book in numerical order, with the sitter identified by name and title. Over 200 of these picture books exist, spanning the 78 years that the Notman studio was in business. Alphabetical index books were also created, making it possible to trace and identify any Notman photograph taken in the Montreal studio. This system meant that the family of Missie Peterson could request an additional print, much as we do for children's pictures today.
