Slightly puffed sleeve-heads became increasingly popular in 1888 and remained in style until 1889, the year that saw bustles shrink significantly. The lady photographed with a Mr. Darrican at the Notman studio wears a dress that is strikingly similar in some respects to the Museum's evening gown (M20281.1-2) but has a very large bustle.
