According to the Wm. Notman & Son studio records, this photograph was commissioned by Miss Gee, a nurse and masseuse, who lived at 40 McGill College Avenue from 1886 to 1892. During that time, Miss Gee's business was turned into a "private hospital." The building was located on the southwest corner of Burnside Place, today called De Maisonneuve Boulevard. It was opposite the new Shaar Hashomayim congregation synagogue, officially opened in 1886. Miss Gee's neighbours were notaries, physicians, jewellers, merchants and McGill University professors and students. A number of small shops were concentrated on the lower part of the avenue, south of St. Catherine Street.
