The Montreal Amateur Athletic Association was formed when five sports clubs in the city, including one dedicated to cycling, were amalgamated. The MAAA's bicycle club, founded in 1878, operated under paramilitary rules. Its members had to wear caps and navy blue uniforms resembling those worn by soldiers. They often went on two- or three-day excursions on their velocipedes and tricycles.
