In this photograph from the William Notman studios, Mrs. G.S. Davidson of Montreal is wearing an outfit which is, in certain respects, reminiscent of a dress in the McCord Museum (M9188.8.131.52-2). One sees the same type of fitted and buttoned bodice with a basque that is longer in the back than in front (a basque is an extension of the bodice that falls below the waist). The twist of the bustle and the elaborately draped outer skirt also recall those of the Museum's dress.
It is estimated that 80 % of the photographs taken at the Notman studios during this period were portraits. Most of the models were anglophones from Montreal and the surrounding areas, and came from very well-off backgrounds.
