A Mrs. Pennington appears in the Notman photography studio payroll book that is now in the Museum archives. The woman seen here seems to be that employee.

Mrs. Pennington worked at the Notman photography studio for two years, from 1881 to 1883. Her pay during that time was $12 every two weeks. It is not known exactly what her duties were with the studio.

She was definitely not a photographer, because Notman had no women in that position. But she may have worked as a receptionist, secretary, dressing room assistant, colourist or retoucher. She may also have worked in printing, finishing or shipping.
