The children of Mrs. A. Macpherson were photographed in William Notman's studio in Montreal. In keeping with their age, they are surrounded by dolls, miniature chairs and a drum.
The Notman studio photographed numerous children, especially children from well-to-do-families. It wasn't particularly easy to photograph children at the time because of exposure times, which required that subjects hold their pose for a relatively long time. These children were no doubt propped up by supports, accessories used in Notman's studio to help his subjects keep still. Nonetheless, the drumsticks in the hand of the boy are slightly blurred, an indication that he was unable to stay perfectly still throughout the exposure time.
