Keys to History

The Allan family held a position at the summit of the Montreal social pyramid. In the photo, we can see one of Sir Hugh Allan's grandchildren in the arms of its nurse. Like most of the infants of the Montreal upper classes, this child was entrusted to the care of a nurse or a nanny, from birth until school age. The nanny ruled the nursery, a suit of rooms reserved for the children and located on the third floor of the house, below the attic.
