Sir John William Dawson (1820-1899) was a respected Canadian scientist. This photograph shows him at age 75, near the end of his life. After a serious bout of pneumonia a few years earlier, in 1892, he quit his job as Principal of McGill University, a position he had held for the past 33 years.

In 1847, when he came back from Edinburgh with a diploma in his pocket, Dawson became the first accredited field geologist in North America. Over his long career, Dawson would conduct numerous research projects and publish many works on geology. A fervent Christian and anti-Darwinist, he began giving lectures on his vision of science and the Bible starting in 1855.
