David Ross McCord was the fourth child of John Samuel McCord and Anne Ross. Upon the death of his mother in 1870, he became chief administrator of the family estate, which included the Nazareth Fief. Part of his income came from this source. Although he became a jurist like his father, David Ross had a veritable passion for Canadian history. Indeed he spent most of his time gathering together numerous documents and objects associated with the country's history. This assortment of objects and archives was to form the initial core of the collection of the today's McCord Museum of Canadian History, which first opened its doors in 1921.
