In 1835 David L. Macpherson sailed from his native Scotland to Canada to join the shipping business of his brother John Macpherson, the largest inland shipping firm in the two Canadas. He then left the shipping business to invest in railways, setting up a company to compete with the one Hugh Allan had proposed to build the Pacific Railroad. Macdonald suggested a merger of the two companies, but Macpherson was opposed to the idea, fearing that the American interests funding Allan's project might eventually take over the Canadian railway system.
