Keys to History

To make every portrait look different, the Art Department painted various scenes on large canvas screens mounted on wheels, which could be rolled into place behind the sitter, changing the setting from a library to a snowy hillside. This couple has chosen a window, but Notman has left another background visible behind it. In the finished photograph, the other screen is cropped out.
