The English general James Wolfe (1727-1759) was born in Westerham. He defeated Montcalm in Quebec at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, but died on the battlefield. This letter from Wolfe to his uncle in Southampton, England, gives news of General Braddock's defeat at the Battle of Monongahela on July 9, 1755. Wolfe also expresses sharp criticism of the British Army. David Ross McCord assembled an important collection of Wolfe's manuscripts, including his journal from May to August of 1759.
