"(...) There is a third condition which ought to be assumed, viz, that it should be a "Solid Bridge", adapted to the employment of Locomotives. For, although a Suspension Bridge would be cheaper and more durable, the great distance between the city and the south shore, and the limited number of tracks which one bridge can afford, makes the employment of locomotives almost indispensable."
